The Colorful Veil: A Subtle Touch of Love and Regret
“The Painted Veil” is an elegant film about love, betrayal and redemption, based on the novel of the same name by W. Somerset Maugham. The story is set in the 1920s and tells of the turbulent course of the marriage of Kitty and Walter Fane against the backdrop of the cholera epidemic in China. Visually impressive scenes support the emotional depth of the film.
Naomi Watts and Edward Norton's performances skillfully convey the complex emotions of their characters. Kitty's selfishness and Walter's distant attitude make the conflicts in their relationship even more apparent. However, the transformation they go through under difficult circumstances gives the story sincerity.
